100 Years of Chevrolet
|
|
|
A celebration so big it only happens once every 100 years
|
On November 3rd, Chevrolet will celebrate its 100th anniversary. To see how far we have come,
let’s take a quick look back at where we have been.
Chevrolet as a brand was born on November 3rd, 1911 when a Swiss-American race car driver named Louie
Chevrolet partnered with a savvy businessman and dealmaker named Billy Durant to incorporate the
Chevrolet Motor Company. They collaborated to bring a V6-powered touring car to market called the
Classic Six and used the name Chevrolet to capitalize on the fame Louie had already earned on the early
auto racing tracks of America. The first few years brought some success and a few challenges. Seeing the
potential in the brand, General Motors acquired it and fashioned it as a low-price competitor to Ford.
Chevrolet became America’s top selling brand in the 1930’s and remained in that position for most of the next 55 years
by creating and selling cars and trucks America would fall in love with. During this period, many great names were born,
including Corvette, Camaro, Impala, Malibu, Suburban, Silverado and many, many more.
Over the last several decades, Chevrolet cars and trucks have dramatically improved in quality, efficiency, power,
safety and customer conveniences. Today, we continue to break new ground and launch great new models like
Cruze, Equinox, Traverse and Volt. With momentum from our well established models and these important new
entries, Chevrolet has sold more than 200 million cars and trucks and is one of the fastest growing brands around
the world. In fact, a new Chevrolet is sold, on average, every 7.4 seconds! Our hard work has continued to pay off,
with the Chevrolet brand setting a new sales record of 2.35 million cars and trucks worldwide from January through
June — more than any other first half year in our history, and a 14% increase over last year! |
